December Meeting, Officer Elections & Christmas Party
Forty club members braved the cold to attend the December club meeting Dec. 7.
The meeting was the club's annual holiday pitch-in dinner and officer elections. The newly elected officers are President Deb Chagares, Vice President Jim Lucas, Secretary Mona Jones and Treasurer Angie Shaffer. After a brief business meeting, club member geologist Randy Patrick gave a presentation on Trinitite, which is the glassy residue left on the desert floor after the plutonium-based Trinity nuclear bomb test on July 16, 1945, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. Randy has a piece of Trinitite and will be studying it's structure in relation to extreme blast dynamics. He also brought tektites and boundary layer clay from the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) event, also known as the Cretaceious-Tertiary (K-T) extinction. This was a mass extinction of some three-quarters of the plant and animal species on Earth that occurred, approximately 66 million years ago. After the presentation, club members enjoyed dinner, conversation and a gift exchange. |
Congratulations to new club officers, Mona Jones (Secretary), Deb Chagares (President), Jim Lucas (Vice President), and Angie Shaffer (Treasurer). |
