EIGGS Purpose, Membership & Benefits (We "rock"!)
Purpose: Founded in April, 1966, the Eastern Indiana Gem & Geological Society (EIGGS) is a club for anyone interested in earth sciences; collecting minerals, crystals, and fossils; cutting and polishing stones, silversmithing and related activities. The purpose of this club is to promote education and fellowship among all persons in the earth sciences and in related subjects and fields, such as lapidary arts, metalworking and the collection and display of rocks, minerals and fossils. Our club is affiliated with both the Midwest and the American Federations of Mineralogical Societies. We are organized as a 501(c)3 corporation.
Meetings: Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m., at the clubhouse located at 5199 Route 40 West, Centerville, Indiana. This is about 1/2 mile east of Centerville at the intersection of Rice Road and Route 40. Programs are sometimes scheduled before the business meeting and fellowship is enjoyed after the meetings. Guests are always welcome.
Membership Dues & Responsibilities: Dues are $20 per year for a family membership (one household) or $15 for a single membership (age 16 and over). Dues are paid at the start of membership and then at the beginning of each calendar year to continue membership in good standing.
Members are encouraged to become active by serving on committees, holding offices and participating in club activities. Each member receives our monthly newsletter via e-mail.
Gem & Mineral Show: We held our first annual Gem & Mineral Show in 1974. The shows are currently held at the Wayne County fairgrounds in early March each year. The purpose of the show is to promote knowledge and interest in earth sciences and the lapidary arts. Club members volunteer their time to make the show a success.
Scholarships & Outreach: The show is also a fund-raiser for club expenses and provides money for a Wayne County high school scholarship and a college scholarship which are awarded each year. We also sponsor the geology trophy each year for the 4-H Fair, and club members work with 4-H and Scout groups. They also give talks on request for youth groups and at senior facilities.
Lapidary Classes: Lapidary classes for members can be arranged for those who wish to use the equipment at the workshop in our clubhouse. We have equipment for sawing, shaping and polishing stones into finished pieces ready for mounting as jewelry. The workshop is open most Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. (weather permitting) for use by members who have completed the training. In order to use the lapidary lab, members are required to attend six meetings a year.
Library: One of the rooms at the clubhouse is used as a small library containing books and magazines relevant to the hobby. This is available to students on request.
